In science or life ? Recently – Charlie Adam’s free kick for Blackpool in the Championship play-off final at Wembley; in science probably the LHC detectors which are on a scale of the Egyptian pyramids – truly amazing feats of human imagination, perseverance, ingenuity (and a touch of insanity !)

I make silver nanoparticles to kill bacteria. Nanoparticles are tiny… they’re particles which are a billionth of a metre in diameter. You need to use a very high powered microscope to see them. To this day I couldn’t tell you how I did this but instead of gazing down the microscope and seeing tiny circular blobs, I’d made tiny triangles. Miniscule, perfectly formed triangles. Thousands of them, all the same size and all the same shape. Like I said, I don’t know how I did it but it was amazing that something so small could be so perfect.

If we’re talking about stuff other than science then the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen is the world from a hot air balloon. That was wicked, if you ever get the chance to go up in a hot air balloon then DO IT!

What I would like to see are the Northern Lights. What’s the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen?

The most amazing thing that I have ever seen was my little girl just after she was born – it was amazing – so tiny and perfect!

The other thing that really struck me with wonder, awe and respect was ground zero in New York. We went through the site on the subway – then visitied the memorial where you get the chance to look down into the crater. It was a very strange feeling.

I have seen a lot of amazing things, beautiful sunsets, Niagara Falls, but I think the most amazing thing I have seen is my nephew, who is 1 and has just learned to walk. Watching him grow is really amazing, biology in action!
