      I think that the refrigerator was a great invention – this has saved huge numbers of lives worldwide

      I would say penicillin, clarkrm02.

      It is impossible to know how many lives have been saved by this discovery, but some estimate near 200 million lives have been saved. I’m sure you’ll agree, that’s a lot of people.

      And all this from an accidental discovery and a moldy old Petri dish 🙂

      I think the best invention is the computer, because without this we would not be doing any of the research we are currently capable of. Nor would we have the internet! The computer has totally revolutionized science and life in general. And not just a big work computer, mobile phones, calculators etc, all involve some sort of computing power.
