      Here’s a picture of me straddling two tectonic plates – Europe and America in Iceland – .

      We know about tectonic plates from the pattern of iron in rocks that is affected by the earth’s magnetic field – by looking at these magnetic pattern in rocks of different ages you can then track where the rocks were over time – they were not static and the inference is of moving plates.
