I have done a little but of work on the AIDS virus, but it is very difficult to work with, because it is so dangerous. You have to work in an air-locked a room (like a submarine!) which is under negative pressure. That means that if a door is opened then air only flows into the room, so that nothing at all can get out of the room, even in the air.

I prefer working on safer things though, so now I am working on a protein that mends DNA. I don’t have to be so careful with this, as it is not infectious!

My current research works on the fungus Candida albicans, which causes oral and vaginal thrush (could be counted as a STI). However, I want to find out how this normally irritating infection can be fatal if the fungus gets into the bloodstream.

I haven’t. Part of my research focuses on bacteria and to be honest, that makes me itch a bit. Seeing all those bacteria magnified so they’re as big as your fist.

Researching STDs ans STIs would send me over the itching edge.
