Yes – too much. I’m part of two international collaborations – one in the US (Chicago) and one in Japan (Tsukuba/Osaka) and also particle physics is centred at CERN (Geneva) and there are many international conferences and workshops where new results are announced – so in the first 6 months of this year I’ve done – Japan,Mexico,Canada,Geneva,Geneva,Chicago,Japan and in July I’m going Geneva and Turin !
It’s one of the great things of the job – I’ve also had the privilege to live abroad for extended periods – Hamburg for 4 years and Berkeley (just opposite San Francisco) for 4 years – which was very interesting since you only really get to know a place and its people/culture by living there…
I don’t travel as much as some of my colleagues – but I still try to get away abroad at least once a year to a conference (and at least one other conference in the UK).
Yeah and sometimes I wake up in a hotel and have seriously no clue where I am! That is really strange!
I travel about a fair bit. I go to conferences and talk about my work (I’m at one today actually and dipped out of a boring talk to answer your question!) and I go into schools to chat to students about science. 🙂
