I do think that we will evolve more if there are more pressures on human life. If the climater does change it is likely that we will all have darker skin – also the human race seems to be getting taller (check out Japan!) – what do you think will happen to the human race?
We’ve got everything we need and evolution tends to bring in what’s needed and phase out what’s not. It’d be good to fly but there’s no need for it as you’ll just hop on a plane.
We might develop bigger brains in the future to cope with more information so our heads might grow bigger!
Hi Cheezybeanz – good to chat with you the other day.
I do not think we are really evolving at the moment. There is no selection pressure on us to evolve. In a way, evolution has moved from the natural world, to technology. Now technology evolves to allow us to do things that we could never have done before, it allows us to live in climates that we would never have been able to live in (like in space in a space station, or under the sea in a submarine). We have air conditioning for the summer and central heating for the winter. Also, we look after the weaker people in our society (or at least we should) and so they survive to reproduce, rather than dying out.
Yes, we do (and probably will continue to) get taller. Also, our teeth will continue to become smaller, and new diseases will force us to keep evolving even if we don’t want it any more. I wrote an introductory article on this question some years ago, if you want to practice some German.
I wouldn’t like to. Monkeys are lovely but it’ll be like going backwards in evolutionary terms. Maybe we would evolve money-like features like long arms if we ever needed to.
I have a friend who can touch his knees when he’s standing up straight! Maybe he’s gone backwards?! 🙂
Do you think that getting taller is evolving, or just a product of a much better diet? I suppose what I am asking is, what are the evolutionary pressures and advantages associated with being taller?
